Jim Keene is a drifter, restless and tough, honest, but never backing from a fight. When he visits Cloud Valley, he realizes that entire area is ruled by DePard, a rancher who hates homesteaders. Jim meets Aurora, a young woman who just lost her father but is determined to stay on his land. He builds a home near hers and makes it clear to DePard and his men that he'll fight if they want one. DePard decides to kill Keene and scare off the homesteaders. The homesteaders, finally, decide it's time to fight for their rights. A couple of local ranchers, believing that DePard has gone too far, join in. It all comes to a head during a blizzard. Keene is captured and escapes. DePard kidnaps Aurora, but the man he leaves to guard her has second thoughts. Before the night is over, DePard and his men are dead or on the run. Keene, in love with Aurora but realizing his rambling ways wouldn't be good for her, decides to leave town. But she confronts him, and he decides to stay wiht her and be a rancher.

Review - Rim of the Desert

Not as good as other Haycox novels I've read. Too many characters, and the last third of the book is just a long description of a bunch of men riding back and forth in a blizzard looking for each other. I'm sure Haycox had a map in his head when he wrote it, but I didn't have one when I read it and had little idea of what was going on. Keene was an annoying character, more of an instigator than a typical hero.
