Rancher Ben Herendeen intends to take over the region, kicking out any homesteaders, small ranchers, or anyone else who stands in his way. Clay Morgan, another big rancher, refuses to join Ben — in part because he has no issue with anyone who's law-abiding, and partly because of a long-standing hatred between the two men. Ten years before, Clay had married Lila hastily, on impulse, and they both soon realized the marriage was a mistake. Ben had wanted Lila for himself, and on her deathbed, Lila had informed Clay that she preferred Ben. At the same time, Catherine, the sister of another rancher had been in love with Clay and hurt when he married Lila. All of this swirls around as there are confrontations and gunfights and deaths. In the end, Clay kills Ben in a showdown and realizes that he has to forget Lila and his grudges and move on. He goes to Catherine, who has been waiting patiently for him all along.

Review - Saddle and Ride

I like Haycox's writing, and this book kept my interest, but there were too many characters and too many tangents to make it a great book.
