Buck Surratt is wandering, looking for a place to settle and have some peace. One night he hears a shot and goes to explore. He finds a dead man, and a short time later, he finds trouble. The man's brother, Bill Head, accuses Buck and wants him dead. Rancher Sam Torveen stands up for Buck and hires him to work on his sheep ranch. Head gathers all the cattle ranchers in the area and declares war. But Judith, the daughter of one of the cattle ranchers, catches Buck's attention. Head and his men destroy Sam's sheep and wound him. Buck goes for help for Sam and then leads Head's men away. In the end, it comes down to a gunfight on main street, and when Head is killed, the war is over. Buck, knowing that Sam loves Judith, figures he's not going to find the peace he's looking for there. But Judith rides after him and changes his mind.

Review - Trail Smoke

Enjoyable, although there were some weak spots. Buck is just a little too faultless, and the way he always seems to be alone but luckily has help show up at all the right moments was too pat. There were also too many sub-plots with people holding grudges against people that has nothing to do with the main plot.
