Much going on at the Golden Fleece inn in England. Owner Will Oakley and his two daughters, Myrtle and Harriet, and the servant girl Effie have a night of crisis. An old shipmate of Will's arrives, threatens to tell a secret about Will's past that will get him hung—unless he pays him a large sum of money and lets him marry Harriet. Harriet overhears the threat and, to protect her father, decides to poison the man. He gets suspicious and forces Harriet to drink some of the poisoned wine too. Harriet survives, but the man doesn't. But Harriet gets sick, which enables her and Will to pass off the mans' death as food poisoning that struck Harriet too. Meanwhile. Myrtle meets her boyfriend in the hayloft, expecting him to propose. But he tells her he's gotten engaged by necessity, to another woman and asks her to be his mistress. When she refuses, he attempts to rape her but she screams and gets away. Effie's roommate has a baby and wants Effie to kill it. But Effie can't. She takes it to the kitchen and leaves it alone where a woman guest at the inn, intending to commit suicide over the loss of her own child. finds it and adopts it.

Review - Golden Fleece, The

It took a long while to set the scene, but once it got going, it was a much quicker read. There were also a lot of loose ends that were never resolved.
