Notes:A group of people are invited to a weekend party at a large estate. They plan a game called "Murderer," where there's a fake killing and everyone attempts to guess who did it. Except the murder is real. Inspector Alleyn investigates, with help from Nigel Bathgate, the one guest whom he doesn't suspect. After the distraction of unearthing the involvement of one guest with a secret Russian society, Alleyn reveals that the murderer was a Mr. Wilde, upset that the murdered man was dallying with his wife.

Review - A Man Lay Dead

Cliched plot, cliched characters, and writing that wasn't interesting enough to save the book. The whole bit about the secret Russian society whose only aim seemed to be a desire to protect their secrecy was obviously a distraction from the first. It was Marsh's first book and presumably she got better as she went, but this gave me no great desire to find out.
