In the 1930's Jade Hunter travels the country giving exhibitions in a new invention — a hot air balloon. In Pittsburgh, he meets Meri, a young tightrope walker on a circus boat. Meri is technically married to Samson, the circus strong man, but she has as little to do with him as possible. Jade's balloon flight goes wrong and he is seriously injured. Meri finds him and hides him on the boat until he gets better. He goes along with the circus, performing as a fortune teller. He wants Meri to marry him, but she's afraid of Samson. When a cook from the boat whom Samson had been fooling around with is found dead, the circus crew collectively blame Samson, and he is arrested. He breaks out of jail and seeks revenge. He manages to board the circus boat in the middle of the Ohio River. His plan is to sink it and run off with Meri, but he gets trapped under the boat and drowns. When Meri finds out, she leaves the boat and joins Jade in his new balloon.

Review - Black Moon

I wanted to like it. I really did. but it just kept getting sillier and sillier with plot holes and new characters coming and going. In the end, it was very unsatisfying. And then I found out the author is really two women who write in collaboration — and it reads like it.
