Notes:Set in the mid-14th century, this is the story of Katherine de Roet, a convent-raised young woman who, with her sister, comes under the care of Queen Philippa (wife of Edward III). Despite being without dowry, Katherine marries the rather difficult Sir Hugh Swynford. In time, she becomes the mistress, and eventually the wife of John of Gaunt, Philippa and Edward III's son. This story is of the relationship between Katherine and John and the many twists and turns it takes before these lovers can be together.

COMMENTS — Anya Seton was the daughter of Ernest Thompson Seton (also on the list). She was well known for her best-selling, exhaustively researched, romantic historical and biographical novels such as My Theodosia, about the daughter of Aaron Burr.
