Before the railroads, the only way to get the mail to the small communities along the coast of Florida was to carry it along the beach— a walk that was much easier barefoot. On Steven Pierton's first trip from Palm Beach to Miami, he escorted a young boy named Adie—who turned out to be a beautiful young girl in disguise. Steven fell in love with her but was shyly reluctant to tell her. He had a rival in huckster Sylvanus, who was trying to cash in on a land boom and—in the process—steal a piece of land Steven owned. There were fights, midnight raids, and hurricanes. Another mailman was eaten by sharks AND alligators when he tried to swim a river. But in the end, Steven ends up with both the land and the girl.

Review - Barefoot Mailman, The

It was interesting to read about Florida before it was developed, and some of the story was based on history. But somehow it just didn't make for an overly-exciting tale.
