Notes:Cosmo Topper lived a boring existence as a bank executive with a nagging wife. On a whim, He bought an old car, restored after an accident that killed its former owners, George and Marion Kerby. He soon realized that, along with the car, came the fun-loving ghosts of the Kerby's. After getting Cosmo into various troubles, George left for Europe. Cosmo and Marion go on vacation around New England, drinking and confounding the locals. They are joined by two other ghosts, the Colonel and Mrs. Hart. The three ghosts often materialize, but disappear when trouble arises. After weeks of fun, George returns. The Kirbys, having taught Cosmo how to enjoy life, disappear for good, and Cosmo returns to his old life with pleasant memories.

Review - Topper

More of a 5 than a 6 really, except for the fact that Smith here introduces the concept of ghosts as characters in fiction. The premise of the book, however, lacks ... virtue. Basically, the point is that the drunker you are, the funnier you are and the more you grasp the purpose of life. Along the way, Cosmo and Marion carry on a flirtation but never, as far as I could tell anyway, have an affair.
