Susan, a shy virgin from New England, meets Novak, a returning war hero. Novak commanded a submarine and ordered it to submerge to avoid an attack while he was outside on the deck, injured. But he was rescued and the submarine was later sunk, so his noble deed actually saved his life while those he intended to save all died.

Susan and Novak have an affair, but Novak confesses that his desire is to be a priest. After telling Susan that he feels guilt about his heroism, he takes off.

Review - Winter Meeting

Unlikeable characters with no rational explanation given for why they would like each other. Lots of supposedly intellectual banter. Just not a very interesting read.
