Review - A Sub-Treasury of American Humor

A weird book. It is evidence that humor changes over time. Much of it wasn't very funny at all. The best parts were the newspaper bits and the memoirs, and often these weren't funny either — just interesting, like I was reading a book of good essays. For example, there was a straightforward piece on Frank Chapman, the ornithologist, which just an account of his career studying birds. Apparently the editors thought it funny that somebody would bother doing that — there wasn't anything actually funny about it.
