Notes:The Phantom, a mysterious costumed hero, is the most recent in a long line of family members who have donned the costume — leading to the belief that he is immortal. He is sworn to defeat piracy and evil as he rules over a jungle that seems a hybrid of Africa and India. He loves Diana Palmer, a rich young woman who often goes on adventures that land her in hot water. But not fear, the Phantom always shows up to rescue — and kiss — her in the nick of time. In the first two years, there were three story lines. (1) Phantom seeks out and defeats a gang of pirates led by Achmen Singh, and rescues Diana. (2) Phantom defeats the Sky Band, a group of female pirates who fly planes with purple lights. The Countess who leads the Band captures Phantom but doesn't kill him because she's in love with him. Along the way, the Phantom rescues Diana. (3) A miner named Smiley starts a tribal war to gain access to a diamond field. Phantom stops the war, but Smiley kidnaps Diana for ransom. Phantom rescues her.

Review - Phantom: The Complete Newspaper Dailies, Vol 1: 1936-1937

Keeping in mind that it was written in the 1930's, it was mildly enjoyable. But the artwork was rather crude and the telling was redundant since the story had to be recapped frequently.
