Ray Kinsella, a nearly bankrupt Iowa farmer, hears a strange voice telling him to build a baseball diamond in his cornfield. when he does, Shoeless Joe Jackson and the other banned 1919 White Sox show up and play ball. The voice then tells Ray to go find author J.D. Salinger and an obscure ballplayer in Minnesota. Two teams of players magically show up on the field every evening to play the games they missed out on in life. People who are tuned into the magic of baseball come by to watch the games, giving Ray the money he needs to keep his farm.

Review - Shoeless Joe

Weird—I always thought The Field of Dreams movie based on the book was weird too. Kinsella made a point of ridiculing Christians and the Bible every chance he got and seemed to be saying that the religion of baseball was better.
