Notes:John Barr shows up out of nowhere for a tryout with the Mets and is soon the best ballplayer in the nation. He has no friends, unless you count Swizzlehead the center fielder. There's also Ellie, the sportswriter, who is in love with him. The Mets win several championships, even when Stanzi, a power-hungry psychopath, who takes joy in messing with people's minds, becomes the new manager. Then one day Barr gets a letter and falls apart. He can no longer hit or field, and when the World Series comes around, he's benched. Swizzlehead and Ellie break into his apartment and find the letter — a note from his mother admitting that she shot her husband, Barr's father, on purpose. Swizzlehead confronts Barr and gets him to admit it wasn't his fault. Just in time for the last game, Barr bounces back and wins the game. He and Ellie get together, and Barr begins volunteering — which gets him killed in a plane crash that off season.

Review - Sometimes You See It Coming

There was something enjoyable about the book, although the baseball feats were impossibly heroic. And, especially in one particular chapter, it got far too crude. It also seemed to be mocking Christian ballplayers, although that didn't seem to have anything to do with the plot.
