Notes:Lyman works for the highway department, driving the Interstate loop around Fort Worth every night, picking up debris and helping stranded drivers. He lives alone in a trailer and spends his spare time taking courses on every type of practical knowledge he can think of so he will be prepared for anything that comes along. One day a parrot shows up at his house, and he determines to find out who it belongs to and why they taught it to say the things it says. He suspects these words have deeper meaning. He goes to the library where he sees Fiona, a librarian who has taken an interest in him. She helps him with his research and they fall in love. When she goes on his patrol one night, she finds out about the dead animals he has to bury and can't handle it. She leaves him and decides to move to Oregon. He tracks down several owners of the parrot—it turns out to be about 80 years old—but can't figure out a deeper meaning. Then one night he finds out that Fiona has been in an accident. He rushes to where she is. She isn't hurt, but her car is ruined. Her dog sees him and runs out into traffic. Lyman saves the dog but is hit by the car and seriously injured. Fiona moves into the trailer, fixes it up, gets Lyman established in his hospital bed, and tows him to Oregon with her. It's the first time he's ever traveled, and, also for the first time, he stops trying to be prepared for everything and just lets the adventure unwind.

Review - Loop, The

Interesting. I wasn't always sure what Lyman was supposed to be figuring out, or what exactly the ending meant, so it fell short of a great book, but I enjoyed it along the way. It was quirky and out of the ordinary.
