Notes:Emmett Watson, 18, returns home after spending a year in a reform school for accidentally killing a bully. His parents are dead, and the family farm has been foreclosed. He intends to drive to California with his younger brother, Billy, who has been staying with Sally, a neighbor girl. But complications arise when Duchess and Woolly, also from the reform school show up. They try to talk Emmett into driving them to New York to get a pile of money that Woolly says in in his family's safe. Emmett wants no part of it, but Duchess steals his car and he and Woolly take off, stranding Duchess and Woolly. The rest of the book involves Duchess attempting to find his father, even some old scores, and get Woolly's money. It also tells of Emmett's and Billy's journey to New York to get their car back. In the end, Woolly, who is sick and also tired of being a disappointment to everyone, commits suicide. Duchess ends up drowning in a desperate attempt to get money. And Emmett, Billy, and Sally finally do set out for California.

Review - Lincoln Highway, The

I read it all in three days. At times, it was fascinating, and at no point did I have any idea where the story was going. But in the end, it was just a little too weird and implausible to be a favorite.
