Notes:Subtitle: The Boer War, a Daring Escape, and the Making of Winston Churchill

An overview of the war in South Africa and Churchill's place in it. He went as a war correspondent for a newspaper, with the definite determination to make a name for himself. To accomplish this, he rode on an armored train that went close to Boer lines. The train was attacked, and Churchill was taken prisoner. After several weeks in a POW camp in Pretoria, he climbed over the wall and made his escape from the city. In desperation, he knocked on the door of the office of a coal mine and met a sympathetic Englishman who helped him escape into Portuguese-held territory on a train.

Review - Hero of the Empire

Well-written and interesting in regards to Churchill, but a bit spotty on the war itself. The accounts of the war, at times, felt like filler to make the book longer, since they weren't detailed enough to really give a good feel for the action.
