Alexander Botts, salesman for the Earthworm Tractor Company, is sent to Europe with his wife Gadget to try to establish a market. The book is a series of epistolary stories about the Botts' successes, and occasional failures, which they deal with by means of unbridled optimism and creativity. In the last story, Botts gets huge orders for tractors from several sources and gets the Italian government to agree to building a plant in Italy. Botts' boss at Earthworm wants him to stay in Europe to oversee the plant, but Botts and Gadget head home to have a baby.

Review - Botts Abroad

Clever and amusing. The stories follow a pattern. Botts writes a letter telling of his latest scheme. His boss writes one back filled with skepticism. Botts writes another filled with optimism. Then he writes one that explains how his scheme went off track. Then he writes a last one that — usually — tells a story of surprising success.
