Notes:American soldier Tim met and quickly married his English driver, Sybil, and then was separated from her for two years by the war. Now home, he meets her at the boat. A day or so later, they go night-clubbing and meet Sam Magruder, whom, so Sybil says, was a friend of her father's. And oh yeah, her father was murdered in New York just before the war. Sam gets the two of them a home on the shore in New Jersey. On their first night there, Sam is found dead on the pier. They soon meet Mrs. Barrelforth, who claims to be from the New Jersey chapter of the British-American War Brides Improvement Association. She sorta moves in with them, especially when their neighbor is also killed and Sybil disappears. Tim and Mrs. Barrelforth head into New York and search the gambling dens and old hotels, talking to a variety of shady characters, before heading back to New Jersey and finding Sybil out cold on the front porch. The next morning, Mrs. Barrelforth asks the neighbor and the handyman over for bridge, then reveals that she's from Scotland Yard, the handyman is a gangster who killed Sybil's father (who was a professional gambler), and, oh yeah, he wasn't really her father — the neighbor playing bridge with them is. (He lost Sybil in a card game.)

Review - Girl Meets Body

Started mediocre and went downhill to what is possibly the stupidest ending for a book I've ever read. Sybil goes from England to New Jersey only to discover that her recluse neighbor is really her father who lost her in a card game years before????
