Notes:Hiram Holliday, American reporter, is caught in Warsaw when WWII begins. He witnesses the murder of a German general by Gestapo troops and finds a list of names that includes that of the general. Holliday soon discovers that the people on the list are being murdered one by one. Hiram meets one of them, a dancer named Randy, when he's covering the story of a torpedoed ship. He begins to suspect the ship was sunk because she was on board. He befriends Randy, and she tells him about a German named Barsh who tried to seduce her and who bragged that he had secret information that Hitler was dead and had been replaced. Hiram soon discovers that the list he found in Poland were people who knew the secret. He sets out to investigate and accidentally ends up on a German submarine when it bombs a British battleship. He finds out that Barsh is on his way to Paris to kill Randy and follows, surviving a plane crash on the way. He arrives just as Barsh is about to kill the girl, and although injured, is able to kill Barsh. But with Barsh went the proof about Hitler. Hiram and Randy remain friends, although she marries a British officer and Hiram heads off to be a front-line reporter.

Review - Secret Front, The

Written early in the war when the author obviously couldn't know how things would turn out, which dates the story some. The whole bit about the German submarine invading Scapa Flow while Hiram was allowed to watch from the conning tower was a bit much and distracted from the story. The tale got a bit dull in the middle, although it did pick up at the end. But the story of Hiram Holliday would have been better if, at the end of this, or some other book, he finally found the love of his life instead of always remaining the brave little man whose fate it was to meet unattainable women.
