Notes:Subtitle: The Search for community on an American Street, One Sleepover at a Time

When a couple in his neighborhood in Rochester, NY, dies in a murder/suicide, the author begins thinking about how isolated people are from those who live close by. He begins introducing himself to his neighbors and, if all goes well, ask if he can spend a night. Several talk with him. Four allow him to sleep over. He manages to rally the community around a woman dying of cancer, and he befriends another well enough that he felt comfortable going to him for help when his life got rough.

Review - In the Neighborhood

Interesting and unexpectedly compelling. I've always gotten to know my immediate neighbors fairly well and even been friends with a few. It was sad to see how many of the couples in the neighborhood in the book had or were having marital problems, including the author. That seems to be the norm.
