| Notes: | Sally Pinner is gloriously beautiful — so much so that she instantly draws a crowd wherever she goes. Her father has to hide her away from the public, but Sally doesn't mind. She's patient and agreeable and does what she's told. So when Jocelyn Luke sees her and proposes marriage, her father sees it as a solution to his problems. Luke is enchanted by Sally's looks but distressed by her low-class manners and speech. When he's not adoring her, he's correcting her, which annoys Sally. Jocelyn takes her home to meet his mother. Mrs. Luke determines to make the girl worthy of her son and begins instructing her. When Jocelyn gets ready to go back to Cambridge, Mrs. Luke determines to keep Sally with her and mold her. But Sally is afraid of Mrs. Luke and wants no part of separating from her husband. He's annoying, but according to the Bible, she should be with him. She runs away to her father, but he, thinking he'd finished with the stress of taking care of Sally, sends her back. On the train, she meets Laura, the daughter of a duke. Laura is so fascinated by Sally's looks and low-class manner of speech, that she decides to take Sally home with her and show her off. Sally is swept up in all this and doesn't know what to think, except that some of the upper-class men treat her in a way she doesn't think quite nice. Except Charles, Laura's brother. He seems nice, and when he suggests a day away from the crowds, she agrees. Charles takes her to meet his father, the duke. The old man, 93, is enchanted and decides to do what he can for her. Meanwhile, the others in the story are tracking down Sally. Laura finds Jocelyn and takes him to find his wife. Jocelyn determines to let Sally be Sally. The duke gives her his estate as a wedding present, but Sally insists on living in a small cottage in the garden and taking care of her husband who, now that he isn't correcting her, becomes putty in her hands. |
