Notes:Sidney worked his way up in the garment industry in Chicago, then decided to advance his career by taking a job as supervisor in a pajama factory in Iowa. His boss, Hasler, insists on saving money any way he can, by refusing to buy new equipment, and by refusing to give his workers the 7 1/2 cent raise all the other factories have already given their workers. Babe, one of the best workers in the plant, leads the other workers in a slow-down and threatens to strike if the demands aren't met. This puts Sidney in a fix, because he's been seeing Babe and is in love with her. As tensions increase, she leaves town for a few days. He gets mixed up with a society dame, but when things come to a head, Sidney sides with his workers and they get the raise. Babe forgives him, , he quits his job, and they move to Chicago where he plans on going back to the factory and forgetting management.

Review - 7 1/2 Cents

Interesting mix of memos, newsletters, dialogue, and stream-of consciousness thoughts. The story isn't all that exciting, and get crude in places, but Bissell gives a great picture of small town Iowa in the early 1950's.
