| Notes: | Set in the Parisian underworld and plotted like a detective story, the work follows Jean Valjean, who has been imprisoned for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread. A hardened criminal upon his release, he eventually reforms, becoming a successful industrialist and mayor of a town. He is haunted by a former crime and pursued relentlessly by police inspector Javert. COMMENTS — Les Miserables contains many famous episodes, among them a chapter on the Battle of Waterloo and the description of Valjean’s flight through the sewers of Paris. |
