Notes:Barry contemplates his old dog, Lucy, and comes up with seven lessons she can teach him as he turns 70.
1. Make New Friends
2. Don't Stop Having Fun
3. Pay Attention to the People You Love
4. Let Go of Your Anger
5. Try Not to Judge People by Their Looks
6. Don't Let Your Happiness Depend on Things
7. Don't Lie Unless You Have a Really Good Reason
Each lesson is accompanied by an explanation of Lucy, by some anecdotes and jokes, and by Barry's goals for the future. At the end, he grades himself. And then, in a final chapter, he tells how his daughter on the eve of college, was paralyzed below the waist, and how she recovered. The lesson he learned from this was "Be Grateful for What You Have."

Review - Lessons from Lucy

Occasionally funny, but also sad because, in the chapter about his daughter, he repeats several times that he's an atheist (because a loving God wouldn't have allowed her sickness). He says it in a way that makes it seem that he's sorry about it, as though he wishes things were different.
