Notes:Subtitle: Dispatches from the Territories and Other Far-Flung Outposts of the USA

The author traveled to the chief territories belonging to the U.S. — The Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam, The Northern Mariana Islands, and Puerto Rico — discussed their legal and political status, the state of their economies, and the feelings of the inhabitants about the U.S. He also did the tourist bit and met various people who lived there.

Review - Not-Quite States of America, The

Could have been a whole lot better. He could have said more about the histories—or at least been more interesting about the histories he gave. He also wasn't terribly observant in an interesting sort of way. I felt like I was hearing from a guy who was standing off to the side taking notes for a term paper instead of from a guy who was immersing himself in the experience and really getting to know people.

His bottom line (with a liberal bent but not preachy about it) is that the territories do benefit from being owned by the U.S., but they should either be made full members or be given independence.
