Life on the Mississippi

by Mark Twain
List(s):"Carp 500"
Category: "Travel"
Pages:381
Year of Publication:1883
Date Read:08/16/1993
Notes:The book begins with a brief history of the river from its discovery by Hernando de Soto in 1541, then describes Twain’s career as a Mississippi steamboat pilot. The second half tells of Twain’s return to the river years later. By then, the competition from railroads made steamboats passé, in spite of improvements in navigation and boat construction.

COMMENTS — Twain wrote several other travel books including Roughing It, about the American West and The Innocents Abroad, about a trip to Europe and the Middle East.
