Notes:Cager Fenton discovers a spaceship crashed in his yard. It's pilot is a virtual creature named Lovely Pebble from an advanced society. She reads Cager's mind and appears to him in the shape of a woman. At time goes by and they try to fix the spaceship, they fall in love in the virtual world. The woman is able to download Cager's mind into her ship, then download it from there into his own 10-year old body in the past. Cager wanted to go back to save the life of Joey, his kid brother who disappeared when Cager was supposed to be watching him. Things don't go as planned, and the boy is killed. Cager devotes his efforts to Arlie, a wimpy boy from his school. They become friends and, eventually, Cager discovers that Arlie is really Arlene, a girl. She and Cager become close, but then Arlene takes off realizing that she's preventing Cager from finding a way to go back in time and try to save his brother again. Then a woman named Ell shows up. She turns out to be a copy of Lovely Pebble. Over the years, they develop a time machine, fix Lovely Pebble's spaceship, and talk her civilization into allowing Cager, Ell, Joey, Arlene, and several other people into living eternally by repeatedly making copies of themselves.

Review - A Gift of Time

Cager first loved Lovely Pebble, who was a virtual being descended from a long-gone race of whales. He then was best friends with Arlie, who turned out to be a girl. Then he loved Ell, who was just a copy of Lovely Pebble. The relationships were weird. There were a lot of other strange and gruesome bits, but it was rollicking along fairly well when suddenly there was 100 or so pages on attempting to build a time machine which were incredibly dull. Then an ending that I didn't really understand and didn't care enough about to try. All in all, a fairly-well written but odd book that didn't quite do it for me.
