Notes:John Chenneville, Union soldier from Missouri, receives a serious head injury that disorients him. When he finally is released from the hospital and goes home, he hears that his sister, her husband and her child had been murdered by a man named Dodd. John determines to hunt him down and kill him, but it takes him another year to fully recover. He goes asking for Dodd, which sends the man fleeing. John follows, down through Arkansas into Texas. Along the way, Dodd randomly kills several other people. In a storm, John takes refuge with a telegraph operator named Robertson, and they become friends. Robertson tells him about Belle, a rare female operator, whom he loves. Days after John leaves, Dodds shows up and kills Robertson. A U.S. Marshall named Giddens seeks John with a warrant for his arrest. John eludes him and continues his hunt. He gets sick as he enters the town where Belle lives. He tells her his story, and then she nurses him back to health. They fall in love, but John insists on continuing his quest. He tracks Dodd to San Antonio, but when he gets there, he finds Giddens who tells him that Dodd was killed in a bar fight and all charges against John have been dropped. His life purpose gone, John goes back home to find purpose, but writes to Belle asking her to wait for him.
