Notes:Story of Union Captain Jonathan Weybridge who is injured in the Shenandoah Valley and left to die. He's found by Libby Steadman, whose husband is a Confederate soldier injured and a prisoner. Libby nurses Jonathan with help from Joseph and Sally, an older couple who are freedmen, and Jubilee, her niece. Confederate soldiers in the area hear about Jonathan and try to find him, eventually rushing the Steadman farm at night. All the soldiers, and Sally, are killed. Joseph, Jubilee, and Libby take Jonathan across Union lines hidden in a casket. Libby believes her husband to be dead, and Jonathan finds out his wife has died. They become lovers, but Libby's husband is alive and she goes back with him. Based on a true story.

Review - Jackal's Mistress, The

Irritating. If it's a true story, tell the true story. If you're going to write a novel based on a true story but add all sorts of killings and love-making and so forth that aren't part of the true story, then go the next step and have the Libby and Jonathan end up together.
