Notes:Wolfe gets a case in which a model is killed after eating a poisoned piece of candy. With the help of his assistant Archie Goodwin, Wolfe determines that the death was an accident — the poison was meant for McNair, a fashion designer. McNair comes to Wolfe because he realizes his life is in danger. He tells Wolfe about a red box, but before he can tell him more, McNair dies from a poison aspirin. Later, a third man, Gebert, also dies. It turns out that McNair, during WWII, allowed his daughter Helen to be adopted by the widow, Mrs. Frost. Frost wants the girl because her husband left his entire estate to his real daughter, who died as an infant. Mrs. Frost pretends Helen is her dead daughter. But McNair wants his daughter back, and Gebert wants to marry her, either of which would depreive Mrs. Frost of any chance at the fortune and exposed her scheme, which would transfer the money to other people. Wolfe knows Mrs. Frost is the poisoner, but doesn't have the proof. So he gets a red box and gives it to Mrs. Frost who, knowing that she's been found out, takes the poison inside.

Review - Red Box, The

It kept my interest for a while, but the plot device where Wolfe knows the answers but refuses to tell Archie, the police, or the reader, is just annoying. I know it draws out the suspense in the book, but it just makes the book longer, not better. And the bit of giving Mrs. Frost poison that she could choose to take instead of getting caught seems unethical at best.
