Notes:Jean Brodie, Scottish girls' school teacher in her 40's, picks six of her students and encourages them to be just like her. She meets them outside of class, takes them on special trips, and tells them the details of her life. These include her love for art teacher Teddy Lloyd, who also loves her. But he's married, so she has an affair with music teacher, Gordon Lowther. In the end, she gets neither — Lloyd has an affair with one of Brodie's girls, Sandy, and Lowther marries the science teacher. Sandy is really the main character. She analyzes Brodie and eventually gets her fired by telling school authorities, not about the sex, but about Brodie's approval and teaching of fascism. None of the girls go on to particularly successful lives.

Review - Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, The

A satires, I'm sure, but of what, I'm not sure. Societal mores, perhaps, or the Scottish school system. Or religion. For the first couple pages, I thought it was cleverly written, but it soon just got dull and I longed for it to end. I didn't care what happened to any of the characters. The only part I thought was at all interesting was the description of Calvinism: [The] belief that God had planned for practically everybody before they were born a nasty surprise when they died. ... Although popular conceptions of Calvinism were sometimes mistaken, in this particular there was no mistake, indeed it was but a mild understanding of the case, he having made it God's pleasure to implant in certain people an erroneous sense of joy and salvation, so that their surprise at the end might be the nastier.
