Reviews for Maniac Magee
Review - Maniac Magee
Entertaining enough, although Maniac was a bit too precocious to take seriously, and the whole Black/White thing was overplayed.

| Notes: | When Jeffrey Magee's parents died, he was sent to live with his aunt and uncle who hated each other and never spoke. When Jeffrey was 11, he ran away — literally — and kept running. He ended up in Two Mills, near where he was born, and soon became famous for his athletic feats and his fearlessness. He even went to the East Side, where Whites never went. Having no home, he slept in the buffalo pen at the zoo. He met Amanda, a girl his age, who lent him a book. Her parents accepted him immediately and soon he was living at her house. Other kids in the neighborhood didn't want him there and chased him away. He found a kind White family on the West Side who gave him food, and, after bringing home two runaway kids, was allowed to sleep at the McNabs. Wherever he went, he had a positive effect on others. For a while, he stayed at the park with an old ex-baseball player. He taught the old man to read, but soon the old man died. Jeffrey decided not to get close to anyone because they always left, but Amanda came and found him at the zoo and dragged him home. |
