Notes:About Armpit (Theodore) and X-Ray (Rex), two of the boys from Holes. Theodore is home in Austin, working for a landscaping company and going to school. He befriends Ginny, the young girl who lives next door. X-Ray talks him into buying tickets to a concert by teen sensation Kaira DeLeon and reselling them. Theodore is reluctant, but gets talked into it. When all the tickets but two are sold, Theodore decides to take Ginny. But X-Ray gets a huge offer for them, so he sells them and gives Theodore two counterfeit ones. At the concert, Theodore is confronted by security. They arrest him, which causes Ginny to have a seizure. When everything is finally straightened out, Kaira invites them to sit backstage, and even introduces them to the crowd. They hang out afterwards. Kaira explains that she is surrounded by controlling grownups, and she is desperate from friends. She begins writing him and invites him to San Francisco to see her. Meanwhile, Kaira's stepfather/manager, who has been embezzling all her money, decides to kill her before she turns 18 and fires him. He intends to frame Theodore for the murder. But first Kaira's bodyguard and then Theodore arrive at her room and save her — badly injured but alive. The stepfather is arrested and Theodore is a hero. He returns to Austin, resumes his job, graduates from high school, and hangs out with Ginny. He doesn't hear from Kaira, but recognizes that her new song is about him.

Review - Small Steps

I didn't have high hopes for this one, especially after I began reading and noticed that Sachar made a big deal out whether each character was White or Black. But I kept reading and decide it was OK, even though ridiculously implausible.
