Notes:Emma Bovary is a bored and unhappy middle-class wife whose general dissatisfaction with life leads her to act out her romantic fantasies and embark on an ultimately disastrous love affair.

COMMENTS — Flaubert trained, for a time, to be a surgeon. This, perhaps, describes why he once described writing as, "the dissection of a beautiful woman with her guts in her face, her leg skinned, and half a burned-out cigar lying on her foot."
