| Notes: | A rollicking sea adventure set in the time of the Napoleonic Wars, Mr. Midshipman Easy follows the escapades of a young midshipman who enters the King's service with some ideas that run badly afoul of the standards of naval discipline. COMMENTS — Frederick Marryat (1792-1848) was a sailor and fighting captain in the Royal navy. Widely regarded as Marryat's best work, Mr. Midshipman Easy is based on the author's adventures sailing with Lord Thomas Cochrane. He wrote several books of sea adventures and received so much acclaim upon publication of his novel, Peter Simple, that he gave up his commission to become a full-time writer. |
