Mutiny on the Bounty

Year of Publication:1932
Notes:On December 23, 1787, the armed transport Bounty sailed from Portsmouth, England for Tahiti in the South Seas. Her Commander was Captain Bligh. Her mission was to collect a cargo of breadfruit trees and transport them to the West Indies. The Bounty never completed her mission. Part of the crew under the leadership of Master’s Mate Fletcher Christian mutinied and seized the vessel.

COMMENTS — There have been five movies made of the Bounty story, three of which are still readily available: Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) with Charles Laughton as Bligh and Clark Gable as Christian; Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) with Hugh Griffith as Bligh and Marlon Brando as Christian: and The Bounty (1984) with Anthony Hopkins as Bligh and Mel Gibson as Christian. None of them are as good as this book, and the 1962 version, in particular, veers far from the facts.
