| Notes: | Here’s a wonderful story idea: three Italian prisoners of war, held in Kenya by the British during World War II, decide to alleviate the doldrums of their captivity by climbing the mountain — Africa’s second tallest — that looms over them. Having surreptitiously manufactured mountaineering equipment and squirreled away supplies, they leave a note for their captors (don’t bother coming to look for us, it explains, we’ll be back in two weeks) and embark on their excursion. Amazingly enough, the tale is true, and Benuzzi’s firsthand account of the extraordinary exploit is filled with suspense, humor, courage, peril, and all the drama any reader could desire. An amusing, gripping, and singular adventure, well-told. This is one of several books on the list discovered by group members in A Common Reader Catalog. And it was from that catalog that we stole the above review — word for word. |
