Notes:The unthinkable has happened — nuclear war. In most of the world, life is over. Only in Australia do people still carry on. But the cloud of deadly radiation is getting closer. A group of ordinary people face imminent death, each in his or her own way: a pretty girl drinks too much and tries to entice a married man into an affair; a young couple makes plans for their daughter’s future; a sedate scientist buys a high-powered sports car and enters a race. And each day, the end gets closer.

COMMENTS — Nevil Shute is another in the list of early aviators who were also excellent writers. His autobiography, Slide Rule, tells the story of his life as an aircraft designer and pilot between the world wars, “when aeroplanes were small and easily built, and there were still fresh things to be learned on every flight.”
