| Notes: | An autobiographical account of the author’s life from 1914 to 1931 after her marriage to Baron Bror Blixen-Finecke, when she managed a coffee plantation in Kenya. Dinesen recounts her profound love of the land, her affection for the fading culture of colonial Africa, her romance with an English hunter, and the eventual failure of her farm. COMMENTS — For an odd sort of companion book, read West with the Night, by Beryl Markham (also on the Carp 500). Markham and Dinesen were both in love with the same man, they lived close together in Kenya and were part of the small European community, but they rarely mention each other in their books. I wonder why? |
