Notes:Willie Stark came from a poor background, became a lawyer and was elected governor. A self-styled man of the people, he soon learns to use such tactics as bribery and intimidation to assure passage of his populist programs such as the building of new rural roads and hospitals. These methods account for his power, but are also responsible for his ultimate downfall.

COMMENTS — The character of Willie Stark is based on Huey Long, the governor of Louisiana during the late 1920s and early 1930s. If you want to learn more about Huey Long, read Harry T. Williams biography, Huey Long. It is a riveting account of machine politics in the early 20th century.
