COMMENTS — Written in epistolary style (as a series of letters). Pamela is often credited with being the first English novel. It was also innovative in its concentration on a single action — in this case a courtship.

Review - Pamela

In every way, Pamela is faultless — her looks, her manner, her intelligence, her behavior — and I think she'd be an annoying person to know. The book is written as a series of letters from Pamela to her parents, and this plot device is extremely forced. Her turnabout in attitude toward the Master is unbelieveable — or she's a conniver, which led to Henry Fielding's satire, Shamela.
