Notes:The narrator, a shy, awkward young woman, marries the wealthy, brooding husband, Maxim de Winter. They live at Maxim’s estate, Manderley, in Cornwall. The narrator, who is never named, feels inferior to Rebecca, de Winter’s first wife, who personifies glamour and gaiety. Mrs. Danvers, the sinister housekeeper, constantly mentions how much Maxim loved Rebecca. The second Mrs. de Winter lives under this shadow until she discovers the true nature of her husband’s first marriage.

COMMENTS — Dapne Du Maurier wrote a series of suspense/romance novels, including Frenchman’s Creek and Jamaica Inn.
