Scotland: The Story of a Nation

by Magnus Magnusson
Category: "World History - Political"
Pages:692
Year of Publication:2001
Date Read:08/19/2002
Notes:Magnusson gives a good overview of 2,000 years of history. He covers the kings, politics, religion and military campaigns without getting bogged down in details but with enough information to teach. He stops along the way to debunk some popular myths (MacBeth, Braveheart, tartans) and seems to enjoy doing it. He is very sketchy on events post-1746 and the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie. The two remaining chapters cover Sir Walter Scott and the attempt (finally successful in 1999) to restart the Scottish Parliament.
