Review - Finding Neverland

Barrie opens a play in London and sees it flop. He goes to a park the next day and meets the four Davies brothers and their mother, Sylvia. He starts to play with them and meets them on successive days. Barrie uses the boys for inspiration for a new play. As his relationship with the Davies family develops, Barries’ own marriage to the beautiful but cold Mary suffers.

Barrie lends his cottage to Mary and the boys, and while visiting them there realizes that Sylvia is very sick. Her mother, Emma du Maurier, comes to stay and takes an instant dislike to Barrie. The play goes into rehearsals, Mary leaves Barrie and Sylvia gets sicker. On the night the play opens, Sylvia is too sick to go. It’s a big hit. Barrie has the entire company to the Davies’ house and puts on a special showing. Sylvia dies, but not before she appoints her mother and Barrie as joint caretakers of her son.

• According to IMDB, Barrie was going to propose to Sylvia, but she died before he had the chance.

The plot about Barrie getting inspiration for Peter Pan from the Davies’ boys was interesting, but I couldn’t help being annoyed at his inattention toward his own wife, cold fish though she might have been. The movie was also pretty slow in spaces.
