Description:Professor Harold Hill (Robert Preston) comes to River City, Iowa, planning on scamming the citizens into buying instruments and uniforms for all their sons for a boys' band — even though Hill knows very little about music. Resistant at first, the townsfolk soon take to him and for the first time begin enjoying life. One of the last hold outs is Marian Paroo (Shirley Jones), the town librarian. But when Hill gets her kid brother Winthrop (Ron Howard) excited, she begins feeling differently. Soon, she's in love with Hill. Just as the scam is about to come off, another salesman comes to town and exposes Hill. He's set to light out, but when he finds out that Marion knew he was a fraud all along, he decides to stay. The mayor tries to get him tarred and feathered, but when the boys show up in their uniforms and actually manage to play a song, all is forgiven.

Reviews for The Music Man

Review - Music Man, The

I think I like a greater percentage of the songs in this musical than in any other. The characters are also well-rounded enough that it makes for a pretty good story even without the songs.
