Description:Captain Nathan Brittles (John Wayne), on the eve of retirement (required due to his age unless he gets a promotion), is sent on patrol to stop an impending Indian attack. He's also commanded to take his commanding officer's wife and niece to the stage stop. Due to troubles with Indians, he has to detour and gets to the stage station too late—Indians attacked and burned the stage. He takes the troop back to the fort, feeling like a failure. With one day to retirement, he's denied permission to go out again. He heads off alone and meets up the troops. Still technically an officer for another couple of hours, he leads them on a raid that drives off the Indian's horses and prevents war. Now officially retired, he rides off into sunset. But then a sergeant catches up with him and gives him his promotion to Colonel. Joanne Dru plays the commanding officer's niece who flirts with the officers but finally decides to marry one of them.

Review - She Wore A Yellow Ribbon

Wayne does a good job as a career officer forced into retirement but knowing nothing but the army. Ben Johnson, as Sgt. Tyree, Brittles' top scout, is also excellent in his role.

The political correctness police would have all sorts of issues with the movie, but it was an enjoyable couple of hours watch.
