Description:During the Depression, a group of society folk have a scavenger hunt. One of the things they are charged with finding is a "forgotten man," a hobo. Sisters Cornelia (Gail Patrick) and Irene (Carole Lombard) Bullock head to the dump where they find Godfrey (William Powell). Cornelia is insulting and gets pushed into a pile of ashes by Godfrey. But Irene is kinder, so Godfrey agrees to go with her so she can beat her sister at something. Godfrey's politeness and intelligence cause Irene to offer him a job as the family butler. This is a challenge, as the family is eccentric. Irene falls in love with Godfrey. Cornelia hates him and tries to frame him for stealing her pearl necklace. At a party, one of the guests recognizes Godfrey as a classmate from Harvard. It turns out that he's the son of rich society parents. When a woman jilted him, he gave up on life and ended up a bum. But the Butler job restores his pride and determination. After several months, Mr. Bullock's business is failing. Godfrey tells the family that he hocked the pearls Cornelia planted in his room, used the money to buy up the Bullock stocks and save the company. He then bought back the pearls and handed them to Cornelia. He quits his job as butler and moves into a night club he funded with the help of his friend from the party. All the employees are hobos he met when he was at the bottom. Irene tracks him down and they get married.

Review - My Man Godfrey

It was popular among the middle class during the Depression to see the upper classes made to look like fools. Powell does a good job with Godfrey's character, but I didn't see any reason why he's fall for Irene. The other family members are eccentric, as they are supposed to be, but also rather annoying. It's generally considered madcap comedy, but I failed to see much madcap about it.
