Description:Controversial, argumentative actor Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) needs money to put on his roommates play, but nobody will hire him. His agent challenges him to find a job anywhere, so in response, Michael dresses as a woman and tries for the soap opera part his friend Sandy (Teri Garr) was just turned down for. He lands the role as Dorothy Michaels and soon becomes a big hit as he frequently improvises his part as a woman who stands up for herself. Michael falls in love with his co-actor Julie (Jessica Lange), but of course Julie thinks he’s Dorothy. She invites him to her father’s farm for a weekend where Julie’s father (Charles Durning) falls in love with him.

In one nightmare night, Michael forgets he’s supposed to be a woman and tries to kiss Julie, which makes her think he’s a lesbian. He then goes out with Julie’s dad who proposes marriage. He goes home to find the randy old man who plays a doctor on the soap opera waiting for him. The guy gets aggressive and is only stopped when Michael’s roommate Jeff (Bill Murray) shows up. Then Sandy comes by and he tries to explain why he broke their date by giving her flowers. But there’s a card on it from Julie’s father, so now Sandy thinks he’s gay.

Michael wants out of his contract, but his agent say’s there’s no way. So on the final show of the year, when they have to do a live segment, Michael takes off his wig and lets everyone know he’s a man. After a while, Julie agrees to be his friend again.

Review - Tootsie

Hilarious. I watched it several times when it first came out, so I know the movie pretty well, but it still cracks me up. I’ve borrowed Bill Murray’s line about how he doesn’t want people to come to see his plays. Instead, he wants to play before people who come into the theater to get out of the rain because those are people who are “alive on the planet.”
