Review - Titanic

Here are some scattered thoughts I had.

This was a very ponderous movie. The plot with Jack and Rose could have been entertaining, but it dragged. The story of the ship was the real story, but even that went on and on. And on. The best word I can come up with to describe the movie is “wallowing.”

The water in the North Atlantic was so cold that nobody could survive for more than 10 minutes. Yet Jack and Rose spent half the movie swimming in that very same water belowdecks. What's with that?

Ioan Gruffedd (from Amazing Grace the the Fantastic Four movies) plays 5th Officer Howard Lowe, the officer of the one lifeboat that came back for survivors. Good thing. It would have been very disturbing to see Mr. Fantastic (or Wilberforce for that matter) as a bad guy.

I still hate computer animation.

Every time I've seen or read something about the Titanic, I've had the same thought. If I had been on the ship, as soon as I realized it was going down and the lifeboats weren't going to hold everybody, I would have headed for the dining room. The tables and chairs were wood. There were floatation devices all over the place. I would have built a raft, pushed it off the bow when it went under water and paddled away.

Throwing the world's largest and most valuable diamond overboard as a token of honor to some guy you knew for two days 85 years earlier was an extraordinarily self-indulgent thing to do.
